WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Junior women's tennis player Melissa Iqbal advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships hosted by Wisconsin on Sunday, Oct. 28. She defeated Minnesota's Amy Thomas 6-3, 6-3.
Iqbal, now in the round of 16, has to win two matches on Monday in order to make the title match on Tuesday. She starts with Illinois State's Alesia Mikaleyeva, to whom she lost 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 in a dual match last spring.
Freshman Lara Burgarello missed her shot at a quarterfinal berth with a three-set loss to Illinois State's Liina Suurvarik, 6-3, 2-6, 6-0.
In doubles, Iqbal and Burgarello lost 8-2 to sixth-seeded Suurvarik and Mikalayeva. Purdue's second doubles team of sophomore Gretchen Haynor and junior Missy Wright lost 8-5 to Indiana's fourth-seeded Schlukebir and Tran.
