WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team found success at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships in Madison, Wis., today.
Head coach Mat Iandolo was excited for the Boilermakers.
"They did really well today," Iandolo said. "We have had unprecedented success up to this point and hope to keep the momentum going throughout the tournament."
In main draw singles, junior Melissa Iqbal defeated Drake's Annali de Bruyn 6-3, 1-6, 6-1. In the round of 32 competitors, she dominated Northern Iowa's Kylene Wong 6-2, 6-1. Freshman Lara Burgarello upset Notre Dame's No. 6 seed, Nina Vaughn, 6-3, 6-2. Burgarello then won a marathon match against Western Michigan's No. 1 player, Larissa Chinwah, 7-6, 2-6, 6-4.
Freshman Amy Walgenbach beat Marquette's Anabelle Espinose 6-3, 6-1, but fell 6-2, 6-1 to Northwestern's No. 5 seed, Marine Piriou. Sophomore Gretchen Haynor defeated Northern Illinois' Branka Savic 6-2, 6-4 before losing a heartbreaker to Drake's Cecily Dubusker 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the round of 32.
In main draw doubles, Purdue's team of senior Lynsey Fick and freshman Shawna Zuccarini fell 8-4 to Wisconsin's McElroy and McGaffigan.
Iqbal and Burgarello defeated Ohio State's No. 3-seeded combo of Rincon and Fisk 9-8(3). Then they upset Wisconsin's tandem of Dougherty and Martin 8-6. In the round of 16, Iqbal and Burgarello won 9-7 against Indiana's duo of Field and Radel.
Haynor and junior Missy Wright combined and defeated Wisconsin's pair of Rauh and Gonzaga 8-3. The Purdue combo then defeated Drake's team of Dubusker and Saluri 8-2 and Iowa's tandem of Neykova and Haas 8-2
Both doubles teams will advance to semifinals on Sunday, Oct. 28 beginning at 9 a.m. Burgarello and Iqbal will continue playing in main draw singles at 1 p.m. Full results can be found at www.uwbadgers.com.
