WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team competed in qualifying singles and main draw doubles in the Midwest Regional Championships in Madison, Wis., today, Friday, Oct. 26.
In the qualifying singles, freshman Lara Burgarello defeated Iowa's Pascale Veraverbeke 6-2, 6-3. This win advances her to the semifinal round on Saturday, Oct. 27. Freshman Shawna Zuccarini lost, 7-6 (6), 6-1, to Notre Dame's Katie Cunha.
In the main draw doubles, senior Lynsey Fick and Zuccarini fell, 8-4, to Wisconsin's McElroy and McGaffigan. Junior Melissa Iqbal and Burgarello dominated Ohio State's Rincon and Fisk, 8-8 (3).
Seeded in seventh place, the duo of sophomore Gretchen Haynor and junior Missy Wright disappointed Wisconsin's pair of Rauh and Gonzaga, 8-3.
All Boilermakers will continue play tomorrow, Sat. Oct, 27, beginning with main draw doubles at 9 a.m. followed by main draw singles at noon. Full results for the Midwest Regional Championships can be found at www.uwbadgers.com.
