Women's Tennis in Quarterfinals of Regional Championships

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis competed in the qualifying singles of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships held in Madison, Wis., today, Oct. 25.

Head Coach Mat Iandolo was pleased with freshman players, Lara Burgarello and Shawna Zuccarini.

"Burgarello and Zuccarini had good wins today," Iandolo said. "We hope to capitalize on them tomorrow and advance to the main draw on Saturday, Oct. 27."

In a round of 64 competitors, Burgarello upset Xavier's Stephanie Bauer 7-5, 6-3. In the round of 32, she defeated Ohio State's Lindsay Williams in a marathon match 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Zuccarini dominated Wisconsin's Lara Vojnov 6-1, 6-2. In the next bracket, she disappointed Northern Illinois' Karrie Tyloran 6-3, 6-1.

Junior Missy Wright defeated Marquette's Sommer La Vallley, 6-1, 6-1. Wright then fell, 6-2, 6-0, to Notre Dame's Sarah Jane Connelly. Struggling from a back injury, senior Lynsey Fick lost a heartbreaker to Marquette's Anna Pavlovic 6-2, 6-0 in the first round.

Beginning Friday, Oct. 26, Burgarello and Zuccarini will continue playing at 9 a.m. Main draw doubles will begin at 4 p.m. with Fick and Zuccarini paired together and junior Melissa Iqbal will combine with Burgarello.
