Swan And Mayer Exit ITA All-Americans

Oct. 12, 2001

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Dan Swan and Scott Mayer of the Purdue men's tennis team fell 8-3 to top-seeded and second-ranked Scott Lipsky and David Martin of Stanford in the second round of the ITA All-American Championships in Stone Mountain, Ga., today.

Swan and Mayer, the 28th-ranked pair in the nation, had advanced to the main draw after receiving a bye, winning a match by withdrawal and defeating a team from Georgia Tech in the qualifying round.

In their first-round match yesterday, Swan and Mayer upset the nation's 12th-ranked doubles team of Florida's Olivier Levant and Eleazar Magallan, 8-4.

The run ended with the loss today, however.

Assistant coach Derek Myers, who accompanied Swan and Mayer in Georgia, was proud of his players' performance.

"Dan and Scott had a great tournament," Myers said. "They proved that they belong at this level. The success they had here will do wonders for their confidence as the season goes on."

Purdue will resume action this weekend in the Boilermaker Invitational.
