Women's Tennis Conclude Action at Brown Invitational

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.- The Purdue women's tennis team completed its third day at the Brown Invitational in Providence, R.I., today.

Freshman Amy Walgbenbach competed in Flight A of singles. In the first round of competition, Walgenbach lost a marathon match to Harvard's Courtney Bergman 5-7, 7-6 (4), 10-6, but rebounded in the consolation round against Boston College's Ashley Backus (6-1, 6-1). Senior Lynsey Fick also competed in Flight A and fell to Virginia's Jennifer Tuchband in round one.

In Flight B, freshman Lara Burgarello defeated Boston University's Silvia Guglielmi in the first round but lost in the quarterfinals to Virginia's Dora Bechliwanis. Freshman Shawna Zuccarini lost 6-3, 6-0 to Virginia's Amy O'Donnell, but regained her composure in the consolation round to defeat Boston College's Amy Molden in the semifinals. Zuccarini withdrew from competition and did not play in the finals.

Junior Missy Wright competed in Flight C of singles and dominated Seton Hall's Lara Spagnuolo 6-2, 6-0. Wright then lost to Harvard's Lara Naqushbandi 6-4, 6-3. Wright redeemed herself by beating Boston University's Alana Marcu 3-6, 6-1,10-8 in the quarterfinals. In the semi-finals, Wright competed against Boston University's Elisa Glas and came out a winner (6-3, 6-3). In the final round against Boston College's Ruta Veitas, she lost a heartbreaking match (6-4, 3-6, 10-8).

Sophomore Erica Baas and freshman Catie McLevish competed in Flight D. Baas fell to Temple's Rene Dqyzel 3-6, 7-6 (3), 12-10. She then competed against Brown's Lauren Cheung and lost 6-3, 6-1 in the consolation round. McLevish fell in round one of singles against Seton Hall's Danielle Houle (9-6(3), 2-6, 10-7). In the backdraw, McLevish defeated Temple's Elisa Jimenez 3-6, 6-4, 10-6, advancing her to the quarterfinals where she defeated Boston University's Vanessa Fang (6-3, 4-6, 10-8). Virginia's Laura James beat McLevish 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals.

In Flight A of doubles, Fick and Zuccarini fell to Boston University's pair of Christine Causway and Lyndsey Dynof 9-8. The pair lost 8-5 in the consolation draw to Brown's team of Victoria Beck and Alex Arlak.

McLevish and Wright defeated Boston University's team of Elena de Mendoza and Hannah Bartell, advancing them to the quarterfinals where they finished in fourth place overall in Flight B. Burgarello and Walgenbach competed in Flight C of doubles and defeated Boston University's tandem of Alana Marcu and Silvia Guglielmi (9-7). They finished the weekend in third place.

Baas formed a doubles team with Brown's Maria Elena del Valle. The combo was defeated by Harvard's couple of Jennie Timoney and Lara Naqushbandi (8-4).

The Boilermakers will rest this week and return to competition on Friday, Oct. 19 at the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, Tenn.
