WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team finished the final day at the St. Mary's Health Systems in Knoxville, Tenn., today.
Head coach Mat Iandolo left the tournament feeling that the women played to the best of their abilities throughout the entire weekend.
"The women showed overall mental strength and fitness. They overcame previous day losses and physical fatigue to finish the weekend strong," Iandolo said.
In Flight Two, junior Melissa Iqbal fell to Kentucky's Trefthen 6-0, 6-3, but was able to pick up a fourth place finish overall. Freshman Amy Walgenbach lost a marathon match 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to North Carolina's Mojzis. Walgenbach finished strongly in fourth place of Flight Three.
Freshman Lara Burgarello lost a heartbreaker to Georgia Tech's Ozolins 6-2, 7-6 (10-8) in Flight Four and completed the day in eighth place.
In Flight Five, senior Lynsey Fick crushed N.C. State's Gildemeister 6-1, 6-1 and topped the day in third place. Freshman Shawna Zuccarini defeated Minnesota's Rose 7-6, 6-1 in Flight Six. Zuccarini finished in fifth place overall.
Junior Missy Wright lost to Kentucky's Stafford 6-1, 6-2 in Flight Seven. She went away with a fourth place finish.
In Flight Eight, freshman Catie McLevish dominated Minnesota's Anderson 6-2, 6-2 and wrapped up the day in seventh place.
The women's tennis team completed the weekend with 11 singles wins and four doubles wins. Full results can be found at www.utladyvols.com.
Next competition will be October 3-5, 2001, when they square off in Providence, Rhode Island.
