SEATTLE, WASH. - The Purdue volleyball team lost 23-30, 30-21, 30-26, 20-30 to No. 11 BYU on Saturday in its last match of the Point Husky Invitational in Seattle. The Boilermakers drop to 0-3 on the season, while BYU improves to 2-1.
"We faced some of the best teams in the country this weekend," head coach Jeff Hulsmeyer said. "Although our efforts didn't result in wins, we found out a lot about our team and its abilities. We look forward to implementing those things into our practices to help us in next weekend's tournament in Oxford, Ohio."
Rookie Leah Wishmeier proved she deserved her first start of the year when she led the Boilermakers with 17 kills. Classmate Lyndsey Phillips turned in 10 kills and led Purdue with 10 digs. Sophomore Eryn Leach recorded seven kills on the evening.
After hard-fought losses in Games 1 and 2, the Boilermakers jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start Game 3. Purdue never let go of the lead as it went on to win the game 30-26. The Cougars would not give up, though. They went on to win Game 4 30-20 to take the match.
The Boilermakers will face South Caroline, Illinois State and Miami (Ohio) in the Miami Invitational on Sept. 7-8 in Oxford.
