WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Tulsa Golden Hurricane emerged as winner of the NCAA Central Regional women's golf championships at Purdue University's Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex, despite shooting a 25-over-par 313 in the final round Saturday, to post a three-day total of 300-291-313=904.

Host Purdue, led by regional medalist Kari Damron, finished two strokes back at 295-300-311=906. Closing fast in the final round was Texas, which had Saturday's best score, 302 (nine strokes better than Purdue), in the windy conditions and finished third, four strokes behind the Boilermakers.

Following the Longhorns (298-310-302=910) were New Mexico State (303-299-323=925), Oklahoma State (304-295-326=925), Louisiana State (305-305-318=928), Kent State (299-309-324=932) and California (309-312-319=940). Those top eight teams advance to the NCAA Championships at Howey-in-the-Hills May 23-26 near Orlando, Fla.

"I was pleased with the way we played today given the windy conditions," said first-year head coach Melissa McNamara of Tulsa. "We were good enough to hold on. This is our second consecutive first-place finish, and only our second of the season, so we are peaking at the right time. The main thing we have coming out of here is our confidence.

"Today's conditions could rattle anybody's confidence," McNamara added. "It was so difficult, but that's a tribute to this golf course. I don't know the other two courses that the regional teams are playing, but I'll bet that this is about the finest one you'll find in college golf. It was just a treat to play here and we look forward to coming back anytime we are invited."

Damron, a sophomore from Conway, S.C., fired a one-under-par 71 Saturday to finish at 216 and retake the top spot from Friday's individual leader, Tulsa's Stacy Prammanasudh, a junior from Enid, Okla., who turned in a 76 in the final round to end at 218. Kristin Dufour of Texas finished third with a three-day total of 222 on the par 72, 6,040-yard Pete Dye-designed Kampen Course.

Also advancing to the NCAA Championships as individuals from teams which did not qualify for nationals were Sarah Sasse of Nebraska, who placed eighth at 226, and Allie Blomquist of Wisconsin, who was tied for 11th at 228.

"It's an awesome feeling to win this tournament," said Damron. "Knowing I was the top player here gives me a lot of confidence going into nationals. I played solid today. The conditions were really tough, the wind was unbelievably hard, but I've seen it worse here. Conditions like these are what makes golf a mental game. You really have to be confident that you have the right club in your hand."

"We're going to nationals," added Damron. "That was our goal of the weekend and we accomplished that. I'm glad I was able to help my team."

Heather Zielinski also placed in the top 10 for Purdue, turning in a 72-71-82=225, good for seventh place individually. The other Boilermakers are Caroline Laurens (74-79-77=230), Andrea Makauskas (79-76-84=239) and Beth Hermes (78-83-81=242).

"I'm a little disappointed in our second-place finish," said Purdue head coach Devon Brouse. "I feel like we worked pretty hard on some things this spring and we were in a position to win this tournament, but a couple of people let us down a little bit. They are capable of playing better than they did. We'll have several days of practice now to get ready for nationals and we'll see if we can take the next step."
