WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue's women's golf team took advantage of familiarity with its home course Thursday to take the lead after the first day of competition in the NCAA Central Regional being held at Purdue University's Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex.

With sophomore Kari Damron of Conway, S.C., carding a rare bogey-free round, one under par 71on the 6,040-yard Pete Dye-designed Kampen Course, the Boilermakers posted a first-round total of 295 strokes, three ahead of second-place Texas at 298. Kent State is third with 299 and Tulsa fourth with 300. Rounding out the top 10 are New Mexico State (303), Oklahoma State (304), Louisiana State (305), Baylor and California tied for eighth (309) and Florida (312). The 21-team, 54-hole tournament continues Friday and Saturday with 18 holes each day.

"This is a very good start for us on a course that's very demanding and with conditions (gusty winds) that are very demanding," said Purdue head coach Devon Brouse. "Our kids handled the elements exceptionally well. That's the advantage of being here on our home course. Our kids didn't see anything today that they haven't seen here before. I would expect them to handle things the same way tomorrow and Saturday."

Damron led the Boilermakers through the first 18 holes, followed closely by Heather Zielinski, a sophomore from Toledo, Ohio, with a 72. Caroline Laurens, a junior from Montpelier, France, checked in with a 74 while Beth Hermes, a freshman from Dixon, Ill., carded a 78 and Andrea Makauskas, a junior from Toronto, Canada, had a 79.

"I've never had a bogey-free round in competition before," said Damron, "and to do that here in a major event like the NCAA Regional is really a thrill. It was in the back of my mind as we got closer to the end, but I really started thinking about it as I was walking up the 18th fairway and I knew if I could two-putt, I'd have it. A bogey-free round is very rare, kind of like a no-hitter in baseball. It was great to achieve that in such an important tournament with all my teammates, coaches and a lot of fans cheering me on. Most important, though, is that this helped get us off to a good start in this tournament."

"Kari did a real nice job today," added Brouse. "To score a 71 without any bogeys and with only one birdie is quite remarkable and shows how consistent she was. The real important score for us was Heather with a 72. That matches her best round of the season. Caroline had a typically good round and we'll expect her to do the same the next few days. Beth and Andrea both had some good things happen today but are capable of playing better. Hopefully, they will step up and be able to carry us."

Damron is actually in a two-way tie for second place in the individual standings. Stacy Prammanasudh of Tulsa leads the field with a two-under par 70 and Linda Wessberg of Oklahoma State is tied with Damron at 71. Boilermaker teammate Zielinski is tied for fourth with Suzie Fisher of Tulsa and Vikki Laing of California at even par 72.
