Women's Tennis Picks Up Sweet Conference Victory

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The women's tennis team picked up its second conference win of the season in great form. The Boilermakers defeated Michigan State 6-1 at the Lafayette Sports Center.

"This was a great win for us," head coach Mat Iandolo said. "We have been putting ourselves in a position to win for many weeks and today we made it happened. It was great for our kids confidence."

The Boilermakers won the doubles point by taking victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Melissa Woods and Missy Wright defeated Caroline Lay and Trine Lise Juliussen 8-5 at the top of the line up. Erika Quebe and Gretchen Haynor wrapped things up at the bottom with an 8-2 win over Christee Chargot and Heidi Leffler.

In singles action, Purdue poured on an onslaught of wins. Quebe knocked off Lay 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1. Melissa Iqbal followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2. Haynor won over Juliussen 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3.

Lynsey Fick defeated Chargot 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5. To complete the day, Wright defeated Josie Schmude 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6.

The Boilermakers will face Michigan on Sunday on the Varsity Tennis Courts at 11 a.m. (If poor weather conditions exist, action will be moved to the Lafayette Sports Center.)
