The Purdue women's golf team came away with a record performance on Sunday at the Bryan National Collegiate, moving up three spots to claim fourth place.
As a team, the Boilermakers shot a third round total of 281, a combined seven strokes below par. Only tournament champion Duke (279) had a better score than Purdue in Sunday's third round.
"We're looking forward to the improvement going into the Big Ten Championships," head coach Devon Brouse said after completion of the third round. "We are very proud of the record finish we had today, especially the fact that three of our players broker par."
Three Purdue golfers shot below par and another Boilermaker made par. Caroline Laurens had a tournament low 68, four strokes below par, to pace the Boilermakers' third round surge. Andrea Makauskas shot a two under par 70 and Kari Damron shot a one under par 71. Heather Zielinski shot even at 72 while freshman Beth Hermes continued her strong spring season with a 75, tying her second round score.
The Boilermakers moved ahead of three teams on the final day of play, moving one stroke ahead of Tennessee (889) for a final score of 888 to finish fourth overall. Tennessee won the Betsy Rawls Classic in Austin, Texas, Purdue's previous competition. The only other Big Ten to compete at the Bryan National Collegiate was Penn State, who finished at 924, 36 strokes behind Purdue.
The Champions Course at Bryan Park was opened for play in 1990. It has received several honors and awards including being listed in America's Best Places You Can Play, ranked 3rd in the state of North Carolina. It has also received a four-star rating and honored as a Great Value 1994-95 and 1996-97 according to Golf Digest.
This marks the team's final stop before defending its Big Ten Championship, which will be hosted by Minnesota.
