WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team defeated SMU 6-1 on Saturday at the Lafayette Sports Center. With the win, the Boilermakers improved to 6-2 on the season, while the Mustangs fell to 5-2.
"We felt like we came out in doubles and set the tone for the match" head coach Mat Iandolo said. "It was a good win for our squad and the timing was perfect."
The Boilermakers swept each doubles match to secure the point. Melissa Woods and Missy Wright defeated Kit Carson and Dee Dee Herring 8-3 at the No. 1 spot. At No. 2, Melissa Iqbal and Lynsey Fick won over Sara Love Swaney and Patricia Ubeda-Diaz (8-5). Erika Quebe paired with Lisa Walgenbach at No. 3 to defeat Siayareh Rambally and Katie Pruett 8-4.
In singles action, Quebe shocked Herrring at the No. 1 position with a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 win. Herring is currently ranked 18th in the nation in singles play.
"It was a great win for Erika," Iandolo said. "It is her senior season and it was a great way to end today's match."
Woods picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win over Rambally at the No. 4 spot. At No. 5, rookie Gretchen Haynor defeated Pruett 6-3, 6-2. And at No. 6, Wright was victorious over Love-Swaney (6-0, 7-6).
