WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team's fate was determined in the last singles match of the day Saturday when it fell 4-3 to Vanderbilt. With the loss the Boilermakers fall to 1-1 on the season.
Purdue picked up two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Seniors Jason Marshall and Dan Swan defeated Eddie Coates and Bobby Reynolds at the No. 1 position 8-2. At No. 2, junior Laith Al-Agba paired with sophomore Carl McCafferty to defeat the duo of Hambrick and Smith 8-3.
In singles action, Marshall defeated Coates 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot. At No. 5, junior Derek Miller beat Jens Frederiksen 6-1, 7-5.
Swan won the first set over Lewis Smith 6-3 and fell in the second 3-6. He pushed the tiebreaker for the match as far as possible but fell in the third set 7-6 (3).
The Boilermakers will face Middle Tennessee on Sunday at 11 a.m.
