WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team fell 4-3 in its Big Ten season opener Sunday to No. 49 Iowa. With the loss the Boilermakers fell to 2-5 (0-1 Big Ten), while Iowa improved to 4-1 (1-0 Big Ten).

The Boilermakers picked up one of three doubles wins against the Hawkeyes. Lynsey Fick and Melissa Iqbal knocked off Cassie Haas and Erica Johnson 8-3. Iowa won the matches at the No. 1 and 2 singles position, however, to secure the point.

Purdue rallied to stay alive in singles action. Iqbal pushed her match against Haas to three sets for the 3-6, 7-4, 7-6 victory at the No. 2 position. At No. 3, Melissa Woods defeated Pascale Veraverbeke 6-4, 6-4. Rookie Gretchen Haynor proved ready for conference action by beating Steffi Hoch 2-6, 6-3, 7-6.

But the three singles victories were not enough. Iowa managed to beat out the Boilermakers at the No. 1, 4 and 6 positions to claim the win.

The Old Gold and Black will look for a win on the road Tuesday when it travels to Kentucky. Action will begin at 1:00 p.m.
