The Purdue wrestling team dropped a 32-10 decision to seventh-ranked Illinois in their final home match of the dual meet season.
For the Boilermakers, Jason Silverstein, Evan Robinson and Ryan Lange came away with victories. Silverstein, ranked ninth, held off 18th-ranked Ryan Escober, 3-2. Silverstein led 2-1 after the first period before Escobar tied it up at 2 in the third period with an escape. Silverstein had an edge in advantage time, giving him the victory. He improves to 17-6 on the season, 4-3 in the Big Ten.
In his final match at the Intercollegiate Athletic Facility, ninth-ranked Evan Robinson defeated Kelly Madden 6-2. The match was scoreless after two periods before Robinson scored a takedown, reversal and an escape in the final period. He also had an edge in advantage time, giving him the 6-2 victory. Robinson improves to 18-5 overall, 4-3 in the Big Ten.
Redshirt freshman Ryan Lange, ranked 15th at 174, was impressive once again in a 17-5 major decision over John Sears. Lange scored two takedowns in the first period, scored a takedown, reversal and escape in the second period, then added eight more points and the advantage time to win 17-5. For Lange, it was his second victory in his last three by major decision. He improves to 25-6 overall, 6-1 in the Big Ten. He leads the team with 25 wins.
In other matches, freshman Paul Sacquitne lost to 18th-ranked Mike Castillo by a 15-5 major decision at 141. Sacquitne drops to 2-13 in his first year of competition. At 149, Brad Harper lost to second-ranked Adam Tirapelle 11-3. Harper drops to 13-9 overall.
Clovis Crane lost a close match to 17th-ranked Griff Powell at 157, 3-1. Crane scored an escape in the second period, but Powell was able to fight back with an escape in the third period to clinch the 3-1 victory. Crane drops to 14-8 overall, and lost for the first time in four Big Ten matches. Oscar Santiago, who normally competes at 157, moved up to 165, and was pinned by fifth-ranked Matt Lackey in the third period. Santiago falls to 13-6.
In the final match of the night, Jared Williams was pinned by second-ranked Nate Patrick at 4:34. The Boilermakers forfeited their match at 197. Jake Vercelli wrestled in the first match of the night at heavyweight, losing 2-1 to fourth-ranked John Lockhart. Vercelli drops to 16-7 overall, losing just the second of his six Big Ten matches this season.
The Boilermakers fall to 8-6 overall, 2-5 in the Big Ten. The team resumes competition next weekend, as it travels to Northwestern on Feb. 16, followed by the final meet of the dual meet season at Eastern Illinois on Feb. 18.
