WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team picked up a 4-3 win Sunday against Utah. With the win, the Boilermakers improve to 1-1 on the season.
"This was a good win for our team, especially since we were on the road," head coach Mat Iandolo said. "We made some good adjustments from Saturday to Sunday and that made the difference."
Purdue secured its first point by winning two of the three doubles matches. Erika Quebe and Lynsey Fick defeated Irini Kotoglou and Frida Kareld 8-6 at the No. 1 position. At No. 3, Melissa Woods paired with classmate Melissa Iqbal to knock off Linn Ronnberg and Heidi Thomas 8-4.
In singles action, two of the strongest Boilermakers picked up wins. Iqbal defeated Cassie Kasteler 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 2 singles position. Missy Wright also won her second match of the weekend with a 6-1, 7-6 (5) victory over Brooke Wilkinson.
"Melissa is one of our most talented players, so nothing she does on the court surprises me," Iandolo said. "It is also great to have Missy back in the lineup after sitting out last season with a back injury. She is returning to the form that made her one of the best freshman in the Big Ten two years ago."
To secure the victory for Purdue, Melissa Woods defeated Heidi Thomas 6-1, 6-4. Woods returns to the lineup after an injury sidelined her last season.
The Boilermakers return home on Saturday to face Tennessee at 1 p.m. at the Lafayette Sports Center.
