The Purdue wrestling team dropped its second Big Ten match in as many nights, falling to top-ranked Minnesota, 31-6.
Purdue won consecutive matches at 165 and 174 as Kirk Moore upset third-ranked Brad Pike at 165. Pike was named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week this past week. Moore, known for being able to score quick points, forced the match into overtime with a takedown with four seconds remaining in the match. With the score tied at 4-4 at the end of overtime, Moore was credited with the win, following a 30-second advantage in riding time.
Ryan Lange picked up his 22nd win of the year, upsetting 14th-ranked Jacob Volkmann, 10-6. Lange improves to 22-6 overall, and is off to an impressive 3-1 record in Big Ten matches. It was Lange's second win over a ranked-opponent this season.
The first match of the evening was at 141, where the Boilermakers forfeited their match. At 149, Brad Harper faced third-ranked Jared Lawrence, losing by major decision, 22-7. Oscar Santiago also lost by major decision, falling 18-9 to fourth-ranked Jared Lawrence. Harper is now 12-7 on the year, while Santiago is 13-5.
At 184, fourth-ranked Damion Hahn picked up a 12-4 major decision over Jared Williams, dropping Williams to 2-5. Jon Bush lost to ninth-ranked Owen Elzen at 197, falling to 14-5, while Jake Vercelli lost a close 10-7 match with eighth-ranked Garrett Lowney. Lowney was Vercelli's highest-ranked opponent of the season.
At 125, Jason Silverstein lost 6-1 to third-ranked Leroy Vega, falling to 15-5 on the season. Evan Robinson lost a 12-4 major decision to Ryan Lewis, falling to 16-4 on the season.
The Boilermakers return to competition this weekend when they host Wisconsin and Michigan State on Friday and Saturday night, respectively. Both matches start at 7 p.m.
