The Purdue wrestling team hosted its first Big Ten match of the season, putting up an impressive effort against Iowa, but falling short in a 32-16 loss. Two of the matches won by Iowa were decided by one point.
"I thought we did a really nice job," head coach Jessie Reyes said. "We were in it up until the end. We lost the match at 165 and 174 by one point, but we bounced back as Bush and Vercelli got pinfalls."
The first match of the evening was between Purdue's Dan Jankowski and Iowa's Mike Zadick. Jankowski, with Zadick picking up a 21-7 major decision. In the second match of the night, Oscar Santiago defeated Corey Stanley, 11-3. Santiago used several quick moves throughout the match to keep the upper hand on Stanley and was able to avoid takedowns. Santiago improves to 13-4.
The following two matches were both closely contested. At 165, Kirk Moore wrestled Matt Anderson. Anderson had defeated Moore in their previous meeting, and was able to secure a 3-2 victory. Anderson led 1-0 heading into the final period, and Moore had one last chance to break a hold as time expired, but Anderson was able to hold on. Moore drops to 10-6 on the season. At 174, Ryan Lange lost a close 3-2 match to Tyler Nixt. After a scoreless first period, Nixt was able to score three points in the second period, which clinched the victory. Lange drops to 21-6. Jared Williams lost his match at 184 after being pinned by Jessman Smith at the 5:57 mark.
Purdue made a strong comeback to tie the score at 16-16 with three matches remaining. Entering its match at 197, the Boilermakers trailed Iowa 16-4. Jon Bush pinned Ryan Fulsaas at the 4:39 mark to pick up his first Big Ten win of the year. It was also his fifth pin of the year, as he improved to 14-4. Jake Vercelli matched Bush's performance with a pinfall of his own at the 4:06 mark against Josh Liddle. The pinfall quickly tied the score at 16-16, and gave Vercelli his sixth pinfall of the year, eclipsing his total from last year. He improves to 14-5.
Jason Silverstein went up against Iowa's Jody Strittmatter, who is ranked second in the nation at 125. Strittmatter was able to wear down Silverstein and pick up an 11-3 victory. Silverstein drops to 15-4. Evan Robinson went up against top-ranked Eric Juergens at 133, and was pinned for the second time of his career by Juergens. Robinson is now 16-3 on the year. The Boilermakers forfeited their match at 141, giving Iowa a 32-16 win.
Purdue travels to Minnesota tomorrow to face the top-ranked Golden Gophers at 7 p.m. Purdue is now 6-4 overall on the season.
