Also on the day, with Purdue's three wins, head coach Jessie Reyes picked up his 100th coaching victory, putting him at the top of the school's all-time list. Reyes surpasses Claude Reeck, who coached from 1937-69.
At 125, Jason Silverstein picked up victories in all three matches. He defeated Ashland's Giovanni Scianna 12-5, followed by an injury default victory over Cleveland State. He finished his day with a pinfall victory over Marquette's Paul Bugenhagen at the 5:30 mark, his first pinfall win of the season. Silverstein, ranked 13th in the nation, is now 13-3 on the season.
Evan Robinson suffered a minor injury early in his match against Chris Shears of Ashland. Despite battling through the injury, Robinson lost a tough match 6-3, and did not compete against Cleveland State or Marquette. Robinson drops to 14-3 on the season, and is not expected to miss any action. Purdue forfeited its matches at 133 against Cleveland State and Marquette. He is currently ranked 10th at 133.
At 141, Paul Sacquitne lost a close 7-6 match against Ashland's Dugan Bentley. Against Ryan Guciardo of Cleveland State, Sacquitne lost 10-4 and also fell to Marquette's Phil Bronsteatter 10-5. Sacquitne drops to 2-8 on the season.
At 149, Brad Harper picked up two victories, while Dan Jankowski picked up the other victory. Harper upped his record to 11-6 after shutting out Ashland's T.J. Hellickson 2-0 in overtime. Harper also defeated Marquette's Andy Zychowicz 20-8. Jankowski improved to 8-5 on the season, following a 9-4 victory over Cleveland State's Anthony Coleman.
Oscar Santiago and Clovis Crane represented the Boilermakers at 157. Santiago won both of his matches, defeating Ashland's Ryan Wirtzberger 5-3 and Cleveland State's Jason Effner 6-1. Santiago is now 12-3 on the season. Clovis Crane pinned Marquette's Jake Harreld at the 4:40 mark. Crane improved to 11-7 on the season, while picking up his fourth victory via pinfall, tied for fourth on the team.
At 165, Kirk Moore added three wins to his season total, improving his record to 10-4. Moore defeated Ashland's Zach Davis 6-2, Cleveland State's Aaron Warnock 13-2 and picked up a injury default win over Marquette.
Ryan Lange, leading the team in victories, also won all three of his matches. He defeated Ashland's Chris Schlaegel 21-9, then defeated Cleveland State's Joe Philips 4-2. Lange closed the day with an 11-6 victory over Marquette's Mike Kratz. Lange, ranked 19th at 174, improved to 19-5 on the season.
Jared Williams, competing in his first matches of the season, dropped a close 9-7 decision against Ashland's Chris Van Dine. He bounced back against Cleveland State, pinning Devin Pethtel at the 2:20 mark. Williams closed the day with a 4-3 victory over Marquette's Brock Warder. Jon Bush continued his impressive run at 197 this season, sweeping through all three of his opponents, including two pinfalls. Against Ashland, Bush pinned Chris Van Dine at the 3:57 mark, which clinched the victory over Ashland. After picking up a win by forfeit against Cleveland State, Bush pinned Marquette's George Flannick 30 seconds into the match. Bush, ranked 18th in the nation, improved to 13-2 on the season and is also tied for second on the team with four pins.
Jake Vercelli competed at heavyweight for the Boilermakers. Vercelli lost his opening match against Ashland's Josh Hendricks 7-4, then rebounded by pinning Cleveland State's Don Caramell at the 2:43 mark. Vercelli closed the day with a forfeit victory over Marquette, to clinch the Boilermakers' 40-3 victory. Vercelli, ranked 19th in the nation, is 12-5 with a team-leading five pins, which equals his total from last season.
The Boilermakers will compete next on Thursday, Jan. 18 against Indiana at Mater Dei High School in Evansville, Ind. It marks their first Big Ten match of the season. The team will return home on Friday, Jan. 26 when they host Iowa.
