Jan. 6, 2001

The Purdue wrestling team improved its dual meet record to 3-1, following a 44-6 victory over Franklin & Marshall at the Intercollegiate Athletic Facility. The Boilers' victory was highlighted by four pinfalls.

Purdue started the match with Matt Robertson competing at 165. In his first career start, the sophomore from Valparaiso, Ind., rolled up an impressive 22-3 decision over Billy Gatian. Robertson clinched the major decision by scoring an 8-0 third period. Kirk Moore, who normally competes at 165, moved up to compete at 174 where he won by forfeit.

Ryan Lange, Purdue's regular starter at 174, moved up to wrestle Scott Zimmerman at 184. Lange dominated in a very aggressive style on his way to a 24-9 major decision. Lange, a redshirt freshman in his first year as a starter, upped his record to 16-5 on the year.

Jon Bush, ranked 17th in the nation at 197, picked up his third victory by pinfall, defeating Shaun Rodgers. The sophomore from Palmer, Alaska, is now 10-2 in his first season as a starter.

Jake Vercelli, ranked 19th at heavyweight, improved his record to 10-4 on the year after winning by forfeit. Purdue then forfeited its match at 125, which would be the only points scored by Franklin & Marshall.

Evan Robinson was also credited with a victory by forfeit over Franklin and Marshall's Matt McConnell. Robinson and McConnell did wrestle in an exhibition, with Robinson securing a pinfall with 52 seconds remaining in the final period. Robinson, ranked seventh at 133, is now 14-2 on the season.

True freshman Paul Sacquitne picked up his second win of the year with a pinfall over Nathan Schy. Sacquitne is now 2-5 on the year, both victories coming via pinfall.

Dan Jankowski made his second start in as many matches at 149, and registered an 11-3 victory over Brian Bricker. Bricker was able to keep the match close in the first period, with the score tied 2-2. Jankowski was able to pull away thanks to a 3-0 second period and a 6-1 third period for the victory. Jankowski is now 7-5 on the year.

In Purdue's final match of the day, Clovis Crane got the nod at 157 and picked up his tenth victory of the season. Crane, who is putting together an impressive season thus far, picked up his second win of the year by pinfall over Isaiah Hankel. Crane started one other match this season, at 165 against Southern Illinois.

The Boilermakers will travel to Ashland, Ohio, to compete at the Wendy's Classic on Sunday, Jan. 14. Their next dual match will be Thursday, Jan. 18 against Indiana at Mater Dei High School in Evansville, Ind. The Boilermakers will return home on Friday, Jan. 26 when they host Iowa.
