Boilers Finish Dr. Pepper Invitational In Seventh Place

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's golf team carded a team score of 871 and completed competition with a seventh-place tie with Wichita State and the University of Wisconsin at the 18-team Dr. Pepper Tanglewood Intercollegiate at the Tanglewood Resort (par 72, 6,993 yards). The Boilers battled back from 14th place on Day Two to finish off the competition seven spots higher. The Old Gold and Black topped Big Ten foes Indiana (10th), Iowa (17th) and Illinois (18th).

Minnesota set the pace for the competition with a score of 845, three shots ahead of Kent. Minnesota ended day two of the match with a third-round 275 to jump ahead of the Golden Flashes for the first-place finish. The University of Michigan ended the day in third, shooting a third-round 281 to finish the competition with a 856.The top-five was completed by Penn State (860) and Michigan State (870) and Toledo (870).

The 18-team field which competed at the Tanglewood Intercollegiate consisted of 15 District IV teams and nine Big Ten Conference teams. Participating schools included: Akron, Ball State, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kent, Marshall, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northern Illinois, Penn State, Purdue, Texas-Arlington, Texas Tech, Toledo, Wichita State and Wisconsin.

Michael Harris of Michigan owned the individual lead for the competition with a third round score of 69. Harris ended the competition with a 206, one stroke ahead of the second place Ben Curtis and Martin LeMesurier of Kent and Minnesota, respectively. Dave Gunderson of Minnesota and Scott Phillis of Penn State closed out the top-five competitors.

The Boilermakers were led by freshman Peter Karmis who shot four under par 68 in the final round. Karmis ended the competition with a team leading 213 and finished tied for seventh place. Sophomore Lee Williamson finished two shots behind Karmis after firing a 71, while senior Ryan Cate finished with a 224. Freshman Chris Mayson shot a 150 on Saturday and finished with a third round 74 to complete the match at 224, tied with junior Jason Bukowksi who shot a third round 71.
