Boilers Stun San Diego State

March 17, 2000

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team stunned San Diego State Friday, as they defeated the Aztecs 5-4. Boilermaker head coach Mat Iandolo was thrilled with the win.

"This win was bigger than it appears to be," Iandolo said. "San Diego State was coming off two big wins, and was very competitive. This should put us in good position in terms of getting an invite to the NCAA's."

Purdue got off to a great start by picking up wins at all spots in doubles action. With a new format, each position was a point for the Boilers. Seniors Jennifer Embry and Shannon Taheny pounded Whitney Wells and Laura Aguero with an 8-2 decision to head the Purdue attack. They were followed at the No. 2 spot with a victory by Lynsey Fick and Lisa Walgenbach. To finish off the doubles competition Erika Quebe and Melissa Iqbal defeated Katey Becker and Lindsey Hedberg 8-6.

In singles action, Embry got an easy 6-2, 6-2 win over Wells at the No. 1 position. To finish off the day for the Boilers, Taheny picked up a 6-0, 7-6 victory over Karrento.
