Boilermaker Men's Golf Team Finishes In 12th Place At San Juan Shoot-Out

West Lafayette, Ind. - The Purdue men's golf team finished the San Juan Shoot-Out in 12th place out of 15 teams. Purdue shot a 28 over par 892 in the first tournament of the spring season. Top-ranked Georgia Tech won the three-day tournament with a score of 853 (11-under par), followed by Northwestern (857, seven-under par) and North Carolina State (859, five-under par). The tournament was held at the Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Mar, Puerto Rico, a par 72, 6,945-yard layout.

Leading the way for the Boilermakers was sophomore Lee Williamson. The Crawfordsville, Ind. native finished tied for 35th place with a three-round total of 222 (+6). Senior Ryan Cate (Richmond, Ind.) finished tied for 45th with a total of 223 (+7). Cate fired the Boilermakers best round of the tournament after carding a two-under par 70 in the first round. Freshman, Chris Mayson (Bedford, England) shot a 227 (+11) and tied for 56th overall. Freshman Peter Karmis (Simonstown, South Africa) and senior Chad Jones finished tied for 60th and 66th place for the Boilers, respectively.

Luke Donald of Northwestern showed why he is the defending NCAA champion and second-ranked player in the nation. Donald was the medallist finishing with a nine-under par total of 207. Donald trailed by two strokes coming into the final round. Rounding out the top five finishers were Bubba Watson (Georgia), Jess Daley (Northwestern), Nick Cassini (Georgia), Matt Kuchar (Georgia Tech) and Buck Williams (Wake Forest).

The Boilermakers will have a two-week lay-off before returning to the links for tournament play March 11-12 in Charlotte, N.C. Purdue will compete in the Birkdale Collegiate hosted by UNC-Charlotte.
