WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team picked up its first conference win of the season on Sunday with a 5-2 win over Wisconsin. The Boilermakers are now 4-3 (1-1 Big Ten) for the season.

"We learned a big lesson from yesterday in terms of closing matches," Purdue head coach Mat Iandolo said. "We did a much better job today than against Iowa. "

The Boilers turned out excellent performances, beginning with doubles action. Jennifer Embry and Shannon Taheny picked up the first win at No. 1 position over April Gabler and Lara Vojnov with an 8-2 decision. At No. 3, Erica Quebe and Melissa Iqbal defeated Dena Baritot and Shana McElroy 8-6.

In singles competition, Embry was at the top of the lineup and handed Gabler a 6-3, 6-1 loss. Taheny was at No. 2 and defeated Rauh 7-5, 6-2. Iqbal knocked off Mues 7-6 (2), 6-3, and Lisa Walgenbach stepped up with the win at No. 5 over Baritot.

"I am really proud of Lisa's performance today," Iandolo said. "Lisa stepped up and did a great job for us."

Iandolo looks forward to next weekend, when the Boilers take on Kentucky and Utah.

"We received a tremendous amount of production from our seniors and our freshman today," Iandolo said. "We look forward to non-conference action next weekend at home and more great performances from our players."
