Purdue Grapplers Suffer Tough Loss In First Conference Contest

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The price a team must pay for participating in the strongest wrestling conference in the country, is the competition they meet week in and week out shows very few weaknesses. The Boilers opened their Big Ten season on Jan. 22, against the No. 1 team in the country, the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Hawkeyes defeated the Old Gold and Black by a final of 42-0, bringing the No. 1 Hawkeyes to 10-0 (1-0, Big Ten) and dropping the No. 16 Boilermakers to 7-5 (0-1, Big Ten). Junior Eric Juergens started the meet off at 133 pounds with a pin over Evan Robinson in 6:06. Junior Doug Schwab scored six team points when Carlos Blanco defaulted because of injury 3:11 into the 141-pound match. Junior T.J. Williams and senior Paul Jenn both scored match-ending technical falls. Williams defeated James Leavell, 23-7 in 6:17 at 157 pounds. Jenn, who was wrestling in his first match since the Iowa State dual on Dec. 10, defeated Jared Williams, 19-3 in 5:00 at 184 pounds. Senior Wes Hand (Hwt.) and junior Jody Strittmatter (125) both scored major decisions in their matches, while sophomore Ben Shirk (149), redshirt freshman Matt Anderson (165) and senior Lee Weber (197) all won by decision. Purdue will face off against No. 20 Wisconsin in Madison, Wis., on Jan. 22, for their second Big Ten contest of the season.
