WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Brian Cardinal and Maynard Lewis each scored 15 points to lead No. 25 Purdue past Western Illinois 83-48 Thursday night.
The Boilermakers (5-2) used a 15-2 run during a five-minute stretch of the first half to take a 27-16 lead with 7:23 remaining. Lewis scored seven points during the run.
Purdue forced Western Illinois (4-5) to commit 30 turnovers, including six during the run.
Greg McQuay and Rodney Smith each added 13 points for Purdue. McQuay was 6-for-7 from the field, while Smith was 4-for-8, hitting two 3-pointers.
Juan Martinez led Western Illinois with 18 points and seven rebounds. The Leathernecks outrebounded Purdue, 32-26.
Western Illinois got off to a 6-0 lead before McQuay scored the Boilermakers' first points on a jumper with 18:00 remaining. The Leathernecks' last lead came with 12:47 left in the half, a 14-12 advantage on Cory Fosdyck's 3-pointer.
Purdue led 42-27 at halftime as Cardinal and Jaraan Cornell each hit 3-pointers in the final 1:24 of the half.
Western Illinois cut the deficit to 47-35 with 16 minutes remaining on Briay Turner's jumper.
Purdue then went on an 11-0 run to lead 58-35 with 12:57 left on Smith's two free throws. Smith scored the final seven points of the run with a 3-pointer and a jumper.
