Purdue Upset By Ball State

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Theron Smith had 16 points and 11 rebounds Saturday night to lead Ball State to a 72-52 win over No. 24 Purdue.

The Boilermakers fell to their instate rival for the first time in 10 years and second time overall. Purdue had won five of the six previous meetings, with the only loss coming at Ball State in 1989.

It was the second time in as many weeks that a nationally-ranked Indiana college team has fallen to a cross-state rival. Indiana State upset No. 21 Indiana 63-60 last Saturday.

Lonnie Jones finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Cardinals (6-1) and Duane Clemens added 11 points.

Jaraan Cornell and Carson Cunningham each scored 13 points for the Boilermakers (6-3), who were without starter Brian Cardinal, out 2-4 weeks with a broken left thumb.

The Cardinals broke the game open in the first five minutes in the second half with a 13-4 run to take a 40-29 lead with 15:09 remaining.

Ball State outshot the Boilermakers, hitting 28-of-64 from the field for 44 percent. Purdue made 22-of-64 for 34 percent. The Cardinals also outrebounded Purdue, 49-39.
