WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's soccer team dropped its fourth straight match this afternoon, as the Boilers fell to the Michigan Wolverines 4-1 in front of 440 fans at a chilly Michigan Soccer Field. The Wolverines (8-2-1, 5-0-1 in Big Ten) led from start to finish, outshooting Purdue (6-5-0, 1-4-0 Big Ten) by a 25-10 margin.
Michigan opened the scoring at 10:09, with Kacy Beitel extending her scoring streak to a career-long four games. Defender Amy Sullivant created the play with a crossing pass from the right wing to the five-yard mark inside the box. Beitel, playing the ball off a bounce, headed the pass over Purdue's Jocelyn Cavalier for her fifth score of the season.S
The teams exchanged goals in the final 30 seconds of the first half. Marie Spaccarotella, sprung on a breakaway by Michelle Pesiri, gave the Wolverines a 2-0 lead at 44:30.
Purdue countered immediately as junior Sara Field won a ball deep in the Michigan zone, dribbled in and fired a shot inside the lower left corner to break Michigan goalie Carissa Stewart's shutout string of 382:32 minutes. The goal was Field's second of the year and the Boilers first tally in over 374 minutes.
Michigan came out strong in the second half, netting a pair of goals to close out the scoring. Abby Crumpton tallied her team-leading sixth goal of the season when Beitel's through ball sprung her on a breakaway in the 58th minute. Emily Schmitt's long pass in the 71st minute led to Amber Berendowsky's second goal of the season to make the final 4-1.
Purdue will have the week off before returning to action on Friday night, Oct. 8, for a 7 p.m. showdown with the Wisconsin Badgers in Madison. Following the Wisconsin contest, the Old Gold and Black will travel to Minneapolis for a match with the Golden Gophers on Sunday at 1 p.m.
