BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - With a full moon out on Friday evening in Bloomington, Ind., the Indiana Hoosiers (3-7-6, 2-4-4 Big Ten) defeated the Purdue Boilermakers (7-9-0, 2-8-0 Big Ten) 1-0 in sudden-death overtime. This was Purdue's second overtime match this season and IU's seventh overall overtime game and fourth during the Big Ten season. The Old Gold and Black end their inaugural year in the Big Ten Conference with a 2-8 mark.
In the 94th minute of action, IU's Lisa Tecklenburg received a pass from Kristin Sprunger, who then proceeded down the middle of the field behind the Purdue defense inside the 18-yard line. She then blasted a shot on the ground past Purdue goalkeeper Jocelyn Cavalier for the game-winner. The goal was the first was the Hoosiers in over 589 minutes of action.
In the first half, the intrastate rivals each recorded five shots with Indiana having the best scoring opportunity at 18:28 left when Sprunger blasted a shot from the 18-yard line that hit the post. After the ball hit the post, it bounced back to Kelly Kram who took another shot that Cavalier made a diving save on.
In the second half, IU's Tecklenburg got a breakaway in the 74th minute only to be denied on a diving save by Cavalier. At the end of regulation, IU had outshoot Purdue 12-7, but IU held a 7-1 advantage in the second half.
For the second game in a row, Purdue got excellent play from its sophomore goalkeeper, who recorded three saves in the contest.
Purdue will host Oral Roberts on Sunday, October 24th at 1 p.m. at the Purdue Varsity Soccer Complex.
