WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The offensive woes for the Purdue women's soccer team continued on Sunday afternoon, as they were blanked 3-0 by the Ohio State Buckeyes at the Purdue Varsity Soccer Complex. The Boilermakers have now gone 331:57 without a score. Their last tally came at 28:03 in the first half of the Northwestern match on Sept. 17, over eight halves ago. With the loss, Purdue falls to 6-4 overall (1-3 in Big Ten), while Ohio State improves to 6-2-2 overall (1-1-1 in Big Ten).
"This is a tough loss for our team," Purdue coach Rob Klatte said. "This upcoming week, we hope to address some issues and find some ways to create more scoring opportunities for ourselves. The past couple of matches, we have moved the ball well outside the box, but when we get into the box we loss the ball. We need to get a little better organization up front and try to put a few more passes together when we get close."
Katie Traeger got the Buckeyes on the scoreboard first at the 6:58 mark of the first half. Traeger received a pass from teammate Shelley Beeson at about 18-yard line and was able to turn and fire a shot over Purdue goalkeeper Jocelyn Cavalier's head for the score.
Kiley Enmark tallied the Buckeyes' second goal at 14:14 on a free kick. Enmark bended the ball around the Boilermaker five-person wall for the score. The score was set up on a foul right outside the penalty box.
OSU added an insurance goal by Katie Martorella at 75:37 of the second half, when the senior successfully converted a penalty kick. The PK was set up by Enmark, who was tripped in the box, setting up the one-on-one.
Purdue's best scoring chance came at 63:30 when sophomore Kate Queen struck a ball with her left foot and hit the post.
The Boilermakers did not register a shot on goal until the 75th minute on a header by sophomore Katie Redmond. For the match, Ohio State registered five shots on goal to Purdue's one.
"We are starting to show some signs of frustration," Klatte said. "We need to have a good week of preparation and work on trying to eliminate our mistakes. If we can step up our intensity and start minimizing our errors, I think we can turn this ship around."
The Old Gold and Black will have the week off, before returning to action on Sunday, Oct. 3 for a 1 p.m. match with Michigan.
