Sept. 18, 1999
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ? With one day left to play, the Boilermaker?s women?s golf team leads the Lady Northern tournament, by four-strokes over Wisconsin. The Boilers shot a second-round team score of 300, beating their score of the previous day by three strokes, to move into the lead over the hometown Badgers. Purdue, a fourth-place finisher at last year?s Big Ten Championships, leads all Big Ten teams in this tournament. Defending conference champion Ohio State currently sits in third-place.
Leading the way for Purdue for the second consecutive day was senior Stacy Orschell. The Connersville, Ind., native had a second-round 75, to bring her to 146 for the tournament. Orschell is tied with Andrea Meeker and Allie Blomquist, both of Wisconsin, for the lead spot. The most important performances of the day came from Andrea Makauskas and Heather Zielinski. Makauskas closed out the afternoon shooting a second-round 74, the lowest score for Purdue, bringing her two-day total to 152, and bumping her up to 10th-place. Following Makauskas was Zielinski. The freshman from Sylvania, Ohio beat her previous day?s score by six strokes, finishing the day with a 76. This was good enough to move her into 25th-place for the tournament, and help the Boilers capture the lead.
Freshman Kari Damron added to the Boilers top-10 scorers, with a second-round 75. The Conway, S.C., native tied her first-round score and finished the day in seventh-place. Also for the Boilers, senior Lisa Kenley and junior Katie Kinsinger finished 48th and 50th, respectively.
Purdue will hit the 5,962-yard, par 72 course for a final day on Sun., September 18, as they try to wrap up the Lady Northern title.
