Women's Tennis Shuts Out Penn State, 7-0

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team snapped a seven-match losing streak in a big way on Saturday. The Boilermakers blanked Penn State at the Varsity Courts in West Lafayette 7-0, to improve to 1-2 in conference play and 5-8 overall. Penn State drops to 2-8 overall on the season.

Purdue's No. 1 singles player Jennifer Embry had a big day for the Boilermakers winning her set with Rebecca Ho 6-0, 3-6, 6-1. Embry is now 9-4 this spring. The junior also teamed up with freshman Missy Wright to capture the No. 1 doubles 8-3. Wright also won her No. 4 singles match in straight sets 6-0, 6-4.

Also performing well for the Boilermakers were No. 2 singles player Erika Quebe (6-2, 6-2), No. 3 Shannon Taheny (6-3, 6-4), No. 5 Lisa Walgenbach (6-0, 6-2), No. 6 Lynsey Fick (6-1, 6-0) and No. 7 Katy Moran (8-3). All of these athletes defeated their opponents in straight sets.

The sophomore-junior combo of Quebe and Taheny teamed up in the No. 2 doubles spot to win the closest match of the meet 9-8. Freshman Fick and sophomore Walgenbach teamed up to win the No. 3 doubles match 8-4, to finish out a perfect day for the Purdue women.

Purdue will be back in action next weekend as the 26th ranked Ohio State Buckeyes come to West Lafayette on March 28. The match is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. on Purdue's Varsity Courts.
