March 28, 1999

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team fell to 1-3 in the Big Ten Conference, and 5-9 overall with a loss to No. 26 Ohio State, 5-2, on March 28. The Boilers managed to win at the No. 3 and No. 6 singles positions, and the No. 3 doubles spot.

"When you look at the scores, it could have easily been 5-2 in favor of us," Purdue coach Matt Iandolo said. "We played very well, we just couldn't get over the hump against the No. 26 team in the country."

The Boiler's two points on the day came in singles competition. Junior Shannon Taheny came out strong at the No. 3 spot. Taheny managed a two set victory over the Buckeyes' Briana Harris, 6-3, 7-6. Following the performance of Taheny, freshman Lynsey Fick took home a victory at the No. 6 position. Fick defeated the Buckeyes' Laura Maloney, 6-4, 7-6. The Boilers fell to the Buckeyes in the No. 1, 2, 4 and 5 spots, but not without a fight. Sophomores Lisa Walgenbach and Erika Quebe battled back to take the second set of their respective matches, before eventually falling to their competition.

The Old Gold and Black managed to take one of the doubles matches. In the No. 3 doubles position, Walgenbach and Fick managed to defeat the Buckeyes' duo of Castro/Kanepi, 8-4. The OSU doubles team of Dascoli/Harris defeated Purdue's 24th-ranked team of Jennifer Embry and Missy Wright at the No. 1 position.
