April 10, 1999

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - It looks as if the non-conference competition against highly-ranked teams this season is already starting to pay off for the Purdue women's tennis team, which snapped a three-match losing streak on April 10 with a 5-2 victory over Michigan State in Lansing, Mich. The win marks the first of two matches to be played this weekend in Michigan. The Boilermakers will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., on April 11 to take on the Wolverines (4-11, 3-2 Big Ten). Purdue improves to 6-11 (2-3 Big Ten) with the victory, while the Spartans fall to 11-7 (1-5 Big Ten).

The Boilers won four of the six singles matches in the win. Leading the way was junior Jennifer Embry who easily defeated Brooke West 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1. Embry improves to 11-6 (3-2 Big Ten) with the victory.

Sophomore Erika Quebe (7-10, 3-2 Big Ten) broke a three-match skid to win in two sets over Isabell Oelze in the No. 2 slot, while junior Shannon Taheny improved to 4-1 in Big Ten play (8-8 overall) with a 6-3, 6-1, victory over Niki Skogerboe at No. 3.

Sophomore Lisa Walgenbach (6-10, 2-3 Big Ten) defeated Brooke Townsend at the No. 5 position.

In doubles, the 29th-ranked duo of Embry and freshman Missy Wright continued to dominate at the No. 1 slot by conquering Oeleze and Jamie Tannanbaum, 8-3. Embry and Wright now post a record of 11-6 (3-2 Big Ten).

Purdue won the final two doubles matches, as well, with victories by Taheny and freshman Lynsey Fick at No. 2 and Quebe and Walgenbach at No. 3.
