Women's Golf Finishes Fourth at Big Ten Championships

May 2, 1999

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - After 72-holes of golf at the women's Big Ten Championships at the Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind., the Purdue Boilermakers still felt pretty empty. The 29th-ranked Boilermakers, who were hosting their first Big Ten Championships since 1989, were in fifth place coming into the final round of the championship trailing Ohio State by 29 strokes. The Boilers did play well enough in their final 18 holes on Sunday to move into fourth place after shooting a 309 (+29), finishing the 72-hole tournament with a total of 1275 (+123).

"We're a little disappointed in our performance this weekend," Purdue head coach Devon Brouse said. "We're are very capable of playing better. I know that as do the ladies. What we need to do now is regroup, practice hard and get ready for regionals next weekend. Of the 19 teams that qualify for regionals, only eight will move on to the NCAA Championships. We will need our "A-Game" if we want to be one of those eight teams. "

Ohio State won their seventh team title and first since 1997, after shooting a tournament best team score of 302 (+22). Seven team titles ties the Buckeyes with Indiana for the most in the tourney's 18-year history. The Buckeyes 72-hole score was 1239 (+87). The Hoosiers entered the day trailing the Buckeyes by only four strokes, but couldn't get any closer after shooting a team total of 310 (+30) and finished the tournament 12 strokes back with a final score of 1251 (+99). The Michigan State Spartans finished in third place after shooting a 312 (+32). They finished the tourney with a 72-hole score of 1258 (+106).

Indiana's Erin Carney was the medalist for the second consecutive year after shooting a 73 (+1) in the final round. Carney's three-round total was a 13-over-par 301. Entering the final round, Carney and Ohio State's Amber Amstutz and Natalie Mosher were all tied at 228 (+12). Amstutz shot a 76 (+3), good enough for second place, finishing three shots back at 304 (+16). Mosher shot a 79 (+7) and finished tied for third with Iowa's M.C. Mullen who shot a 76 (+4). The pair finished with a 72-hole total of 307 (+19). The best round of the tournament was also recorded on Sunday. Ohio State's Summerset Lovett shot a Big Ten final round record 71 (-1), as she vaulted all the way to an eighth-place finish after starting the day tied for 21st. The University of Michigan's Sharon Park carded the second-best round of the tournament on Sunday shooting an even par 72. Park finished the three-day tournament in 17th-place.

Purdue's top finisher was senior All-Big Ten performer Angie Blythe, she shot a team-tourney best 74 (+2) on Sunday and finished in seventh place with at 313 (+25). Freshman Andrea Makauskas finished her first Big Ten Championships strong, shooting a 79 (+7), which was good enough for a tie for 20th-place at 321 (+33). Purdue's sophomore Katie Kinsinger shot an 83 (+11) to finish in a tie for 28th-place, as she finished with four-round total of 326 (+28). Juniors Lisa Kenley and All -Big Ten performer Stacy Orschell finished tied for 31st and tied for 35th after finishing with scores of 328 and 329, respectively. Kenley shot an 80 (+8), while Orschell, who is a two-time All-Big Ten player, carded her best round of the tournament shooting a 76 (+4) on Sunday. Freshman Christy Rittenhouse struggled in her final round of the tournament shooting a 90 (+12), she finished tied for 45th-place.
