Women's Golf Finishes 17th at NCAA East Regional

May 8, 1999

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's golf team saw its season come to an end Saturday afternoon at the NCAA East Regional at The University Club in Blythewood, S.C., after posting a team score of 309 in the final round to finish in 17th place.

Leading the way for the Boilers was senior, and All-Big Ten selection Angela Blythe, who fired a 74 in the last round giving her a three-round total of 225, nine stroke over par. She tied for 23rd in the overall standings. Junior All-Big Ten performer Stacy Orschell tied for 41st with a 13-over par 229. Freshman Andrea Makauskas shot a seven-over par 79 in the final round and tied for 65th, while junior Lisa Kenley shot a 77 to finish in a three-way tie for 82nd place. The final Boilermaker competing was sophomore Katie Kinsinger who placed 101st with a three-round total of 251.

The Georgia Bulldogs won the team title for the second straight year with a twenty-over par 884. The Lady Bulldogs were just one of two teams to post sub-300 scores on the afternoon. Georgia fired a two-over 290 (tied with Furman's first round score for the lowest of the tournament) while top-ranked Duke had a nine-over 297 to finish in fourth place -- tied for its lowest finish of the season. The Lady Bulldogs first place showing is the fifth-straight tournament victory for Beans Kelly's squad, as Georgia has captured every tournament it has played in this spring. Furman finished second with an 885, while Louisiana State was third (893). Duke (894), Florida State (901), Ohio State (904), South Carolina (908) and Auburn (912) rounded out the top eight tops. The top eight teams advance to the NCAA Championships, May 19-22, at the Tulsa (Okla.) Country Club.

The East Regional also sends two individuals to compete for individual medalist honors only in the NCAAs. South Florida's Kelly Lagedrost and Mallory Crosland of Vanderbilt -- who won in a one-hole playoff over Memphis' Natalie Tucker -- will travel to Tulsa as well in two weeks. The NCAA West Regional -- won today by Southern California -- will send 11 teams and two individuals to the Championships as well.

There was a three-way tie for medalist honors as Kelly Lagedrost of South Florida, Beth Bauer of Duke and Jennnifer Perri of Furman each fired a three-round total of 215, one-under par to win by two strokes over the competition. Lagedrost had the best day of the three with a two-under 70, a score matched by a pair of Georgia golfers in their run to the title. The Bulldogs' Shauna Estes (6th place, 218) and Angela Jerman (222, 13th) led Georgia. LSU's Tina Howard and Furman's Stacey Burnett tied for fourth place at one-over 217. Crosland birdied the par 4, No. 1 hole in a playoff to advance to the NCAA's after finishing in a three-way tie for seventh overall at three-over 219.
