MORAGA, Calif. - The Purdue softball team (13-8) won the second game of a doubleheader against St. Mary's (4-17) on Tuesday to increase its' win total to seven on spring break. The Boilermakers dropped the first game to the Gaels by a score of 3-1, but bounced back to win game two 6-2. Purdue is now 7-3 on its' spring trip.
Freshman Meagan Dooley (7-3) earned the win in the second game, pitching a total of eight innings on the day. A two-out single to center by junior Danica Maher scored two runs in the top of the second to give the Boilers a 2-0 lead. Back-to-back doubles by freshman Sarah Humphrey and senior Sam Mercier added an insurance run in the fifth and Maher collected her third RBI with a fielder's choice in the sixth. St. Mary's rallied for two in the bottom of the inning, but freshman Danika Nice sparked a two-run rally for Purdue with a pinch-hit single in the seventh.
In the first game, freshman pitcher Nicole Crouse (6-5) uncharacteristically had control problems. The LaPalma, Calif., native walked six in five innings and allowed two earned runs. St. Mary's played flawless defense against the Boilers and junior pitcher Jennifer Pick (2-3) kept Purdue off balance at the plate. The Gaels scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings, while Purdue tallied one in the seventh. Freshman Katie Crabtree doubled with one out and senior Mandy Smart followed with a single to bring her home.
