Purdue Takes Seventh at Marshall Invite

April 11, 1999

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's golf team finished in a three-way tie for seventh place at the Marshall Invitational at the Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington, W. Va. today with a two-day score of 901 (+49). Northwestern, coached by former Marshall golfer Pat Goss, won the tournament this afternoon with a score 884 (+32). Toledo was second with an 886, while Kent was third at 893. Notre Dame was fourth with a two-day score of 896, and Kentucky rounded out the top five with a score of 897.

Sophomore Ryan Miller led the Purdue offensive with a six-over par 219 to tie with three other athletes for fourth place. Junior Ryan Cate finished in a five-way tie for 19th place with a 10-over par 223. Senior Bert Jones and freshman Lee Williamson tied for 60th place with a 231, while sophomore Chad Jones placed 93rd with a 247 to round out the Purdue five.

Miller has been the Boiler's hottest player in recent weeks, as the West Alexandria, Ohio native placed 15th at the Pepsi Intercollegiate to lead the Old Gold and Black, and last week he placed tied for 17th at the Dr. Pepper Intercollegiate.

Illinois' D. A. Points was the individual champion with a one-under par 212. Kent's Ben Curtis, who tied for fourth place, shot the lowest round of the tournament with a 69 in the third round. Michigan's Michael Harris, last year's individual champion, took third place this year with a 217 (+4).

Conditions on the course today were overcast and cool, but it was a vast improvement from the heavy winds and rain, which caused a 1 hour, 15 minute delay between the first two rounds of play yesterday.

The Purdue men will next be in action on April 17-18, when they travel to Columbus, Ohio for the Kepler-Cleveland Classic.
