WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The rain and chilly conditions held off long enough for completion of the sixth-annual Dr. Pepper Intercollegiate on Lake Texoma today. The 48th-ranked Purdue men's golf team finished the two-day tournament in eighth place with a team-score of 892. Last year, the Boilers finished in 12th-place at the Tanglewood Resort in Pottsboro, Texas.
The tournament was won by Minnesota who finished with a team-score of 854 to win five strokes over Northwestern at 859. Illinois finished third with 879, while Michigan State was fourth with a score 884 and Toledo rounded out the top five with a total of 885. Individually, Northwestern's Luke Donald claimed medalist honors with a 10-under par 206 to win by four strokes.
Purdue was led by senior Bert Jones who finished tied for ninth-place with a three-over par 217. In the four tournaments the Old Gold and Black have participated in 1999, they have had a different person lead them in scoring. Sophomore Ryan Miller tied for 17th-place on the heels of a two-under par 70 on the final 18-holes for a score of 220. Miller is coming off an impressive showing at the Pepsi Intercollegiate in North Carolina, in which he placed 15th to pace the Boilers. Freshman Lee Williamson tied for 49th-place with a 229, while sophomore Chad Jones tied for 58th-place at 231. The final Boiler competing in the tournament was junior Ryan Cate, who tied for 77th place with a 236.
The men will next be in action on April 9-10, when they travel to Huntington, W. Va., for the Marshall Invitational.
