Men's Tennis Defeats Northwestern to End Losing Streak

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Purdue men's tennis team ended their three match losing streak Saturday as they defeated Northwestern 5-2 in Evanston, Ill. The Boilermakers received victories from Derek Myers, Cris James, Jason Marshall and Cade Lutz and took two of three to win the doubles point. The victory improves Purdue's record to 13-6 overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten.

Myers led the way for Purdue defeating the Wildcat's No.2 player Martin Bengtsson in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. James had to come back after losing the first set to win his match against Derrick Nguyen 6-7, 6-3, 6-0. Marshall also had to go three sets before dispatching Brad Erickson 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, while Lutz won easily 6-0, 6-2 over Brian Moss. Jamie Gordon and Derek Miller took the losses for Purdue. Gordon fell to NU's No.1 player Doug Bohaboy 6-0, 6-0 while Miller lost to Jamie Sahara 6-2, 7-6.

In doubles action, the team of Marshall and James defeated Erickson and Nguyen 8-2, while Dan Swan and Gordon defeated Sahara and Moss 8-3. Northwestern's Bengtsson and Bohaboy bested the team of Myers and Laith Al-Agba 8-5.

The Boilermakers return home next weekend to compete against Iowa and Wisconsin.
