WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's golf team stood in eighth place after the first day of the NCAA Central Regionals. The regionals are being played at Ohio State's Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio (par 72, 7,100 yards). Of the 21-team field, the top 10 teams will advance to the 30-team field at the NCAA Championships in Chaska, Minn. on June 2. In today's second round, the wheels fell off the wagon, as the Boilers find themselves tied for last place with a 36-hole total of 608. On the first 18 holes, the Boilers shoot a team-score of 290. This afternoon as a team, Purdue shoot a 312, the highest round of the tournament by four strokes to stand in a tie with Tulsa.
The Minnesota men's golf team increased its lead from five to seven strokes after the second day of competition today by firing a five-over-par 293. The Golden Gophers maintained their first-round lead at the NCAA Central Regional even though none of their golfers improved their scores from the first round.
Defending national champion James McLean lead the Gophers with a even par 72, and is tied for the individual lead with David Suggs of Missouri at 141. Minnesotas Martin LeMesurier is tied with Daniel Fox of Arkansas-Little Rock and Kents Ben Curtis in third place, one stroke back at 142. Suggs and Fox are competing as individuals in the tournament.
Trailing Minnesota by seven strokes is second-place Northwestern, which shot a 295 for the day. Toledo maintained third place but is tied with Kent, which moved up from sixth place after shooting a 294.
The field enjoyed a beautiful day in Columbus with clear skies and temperatures in the high-80s, but battled firm greens en route to generally higher scores across the board.
Individually for Purdue, senior Bert Jones leads with a five-over par 149 to stand in a six-way tie for 35th place. Jones shot a six-over par 78 on Friday, after firing a one-under par 71 on Thursday. Freshman Lee Williamson and sophomore Ryan Miller are tied for 61st with nine other golfers at 152, after rounds of 75 and 80 in today's second round, respectively. Miller shot an even par 72 on the first day. Sophomore Chad Jones is tied for 85th place with an eleven-over par 155, while junior Ryan Cate is alone at 109th place with a162, 17-over par.
