Boilers Win Cobra Collegiate in Playoff

April 25, 1999

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - After playing 54-holes of golf over the past two days, the Purdue and Kent men's golf teams were tied for first place at the 1999 Cobra Collegiate at the Windmill Lakes Golf Club in Revanna, Ohio. The two teams went on to play a five-hole, two and one-half hour team playoff before a champion was determined. Three Boilermaker golfers birdied the fifth hole to seal the victory for the Old Gold and Black. Junior Ryan Cate, sophomores Chad Jones and Ryan Miller each birdied the fifth hole to secure the win for Purdue. The Boilers and the Golden Flashes finished regulation tied at 12-over par 852. Today's win is the second of the year for first-year coach Devon Brouse. In the fall, Purdue won the 18-team Adams Cup of Newport. The two wins marks the first time the Boilers have recorded multiple wins in a season since the 1994-95 season when they won three tournaments (Summit Collegiate Golf Classic, Colonel Golf Classic and Ball State Golf Invitational).

"This was an exciting win for us," Purdue coach Devon Brouse said. "I thought we played well on both days. We improved each day and shot an even-par today, which was the best score on Sunday. It is a good start and a good finish."

In the final standings, the Boilers had four athletes in the top 20. Freshman Lee Williamson and Cate paced Purdue with an eighth-place finish, as the Crawfordsville and Richmond, Ind., natives each shot a two-over par 212 to tie with three other athletes. Senior Bert Jones tied for 15th place with a 214, while sophomore Ryan Miller tied for 19th with a 215. The other Boiler competing was Chad Jones, who finished tied for 51st place with a 221.

"We are happy to bring home the tournament trophy and looking forward to Big Ten's," Brouse said.
