WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's golf team finished the first day of the Casa de Campo Ladies Intercollegiate Tournament tied for eighth place with host North Carolina after a 36-hole score of 643. The tournament is being held at the beautiful Pete Dye designed "Teeth of the Dog" course on the shores of the Caribbean Sea. The course is ranked 23rd in the world by Golf Magazine.
Senior Angela Blythe, ranked 47th in the latest MasterCard individual rankings, leads the Boilers with a 158, tying her with two other players for 15th place. Freshman Andrea Makauskas is four shots behind Blythe with a 36-hole score of 162, while junior Stacy Orschell, ranked 99th, and freshman Christy Rittenhouse both finished tied with scores of 163 after the first day. Makauskas, who fired an 85 of the first 18, carded a 77 in the second round to score the sixth-lowest score of the first day. Vanderbilt's Mallory Crosland blistered the course with a first round score of 71. The other Boiler competing is junior Lisa Kenley who shot a two-round score of 174.
The 13-team tournament is led by Tennessee, who collectively shot a two-round score of 624 to lead by four strokes. Wake Forest is only in second at 628, while South Carolina is third at 629 and Central Florida is fourth with a 634. Florida State, Nebraska and Vanderbilt are tied in the fifth spot with a 640 each. Purdue and North Carolina are tied for eighth.
Individaully, Wake Forest's Marta Prieto carded a two-round score of 153 to lead by one stroke entering the final round of play tomorrow. The third and final 18 holes will be played tomorrow morning.
