Boilers Complete First Day of Big Ten Championships

April 30, 1999

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - About 12-hours of golf was played on Friday at the newly redesigned Kampen Golf Course, and after 36-holes the Purdue women's golf team is in fifth place with a team-score of 643 (+65). The Ohio State Buckeyes leads the 11-team field at the 18th-annual Big Ten Championships with a team-score of 623 (+23). Defending Big Ten champion Indiana is second seven strokes behind Ohio State, who are coming off a victory at the Lady Buckeye Invitational last weekend. Wisconsin and Michigan are tied for third at 638 (+62) and Purdue is alone in fifth to round out the top five. Only seven strokes separate the third through seventh-place teams after one-day of competition.

Leading the way for Purdue is senior Angie Blythe, who despite being hampered by a bad back, stands alone in eighth place after shooting a two-round score of 156. Also playing well for the Boilermakers is sophomore Katie Kinsinger, who is tied for 17th-place with a 161. Freshmen Andrea Makaukas is tied for 29th-place, while Christy Rittenhouse is tied for 29th-place with scores of 162 and 164, respectively. Junior Lisa Kenley shot a 167 to be in a tie for 36th-place and junior Stacy Orschell is tied for 46th-place at 170 to round out the Boilermaker field.

After the first round of 18 today, the Boilers were sitting pretty five shots off the pace of the Buckeyes, who shot a first-round score of 310. In that first round, three Boilers broke 80 with Rittenhouse carding a 77 for a team-best score. During the second round the wheels fell off, as only one Boiler, Blythe, broke 80. The Evansville, Ind., native shot a 76. The Old and Black as a team shot a 326 to now stand-alone in fifth place at 623.

After the first day, OSU's Amber Amstutz leads the 66-player field by one stroke over defending champion Erin Carney of Indiana with a 149 (+5). The ladies played 36-holes on Friday and will play 18 the final two days. The ladies will tee off at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
