WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team followed up a 5-2 victory over Miami of Ohio with a 6-0 win over Illinois State in the second match of the doubleheader on Feb. 13 at the Lafayette Sports Center. The Boilermakers improve to 3-0 with the victory, while Illinois State falls to 2-4.
"I was very pleased with the effort today in both matches," Purdue coach Mat Iandolo said. "We came out after not playing great in doubles in the first match and came out with a lot of intensity in singles which was what turned the match around. In the second match we played a little better in doubles and we played solidly, if not spectacularly, in singles. I was very impressed with Jennifer Embry in her singles match win over Natalia Soetrisno of Miami of Ohio. Erika (Quebe) stepped up and showed that she can be a great No. 2. We accomplished a lot. We got a look at a lot of different people playing, which will help us as we move through the season."
Purdue started out in doubles action with victories by junior Jennifer Embry and freshman Missy Wright at No. 1 and sophomore Erika Quebe and freshman Lynsey Fick at No. 3, which seized the doubles point for the Boilers. Junior Shannon Taheny and sophomore Lisa Walgenbach fell in the No. 2 slot.
Purdue had an impressive showing in singles, where all but one match was won in straight sets. Walgenbach's matchup at No. 3 singles with the Redbirds' Flora Karjai was declared a no winner. Embry defeated Naoko Moore 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 1 position, while Quebe conquered Zana Frigonovic 6-0, 6-3, at No. 2. The Boilers also received wins from Wright, senior Laura Avgerinos and senior Katy Moran in the No. 4, 5 and 6 positions, respectively.
Purdue will be on the road next against Kentucky on Feb. 17 at 2 p.m.
