February 20, 1999

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team followed up a 6-1 victory over Western Michigan with a 7-0 win over Miami (Ohio) in the second match of the doubleheader on Feb. 20 at the Lafayette Sports Center. The Boilermakers improve to 5-0 with the victory, extending its home-match winning streak to 13 matches.

"I was pleased with how hard we competed today," Purdue coach Tim Madden said. "Our objective today was to get our confidence level up. As the day went on the confidence level seemed to get higher and higher. That was nice to see."

Purdue started out in doubles action with victories by senior Derek Myers and Laith Al-Agba at No. 1, senior Jamie Gordon and sophomore Dan Swan at No.2 and junior G.T. Cozad and freshman Derek Miller at No. 3. The team of Myers and Swan is now 5-0 in dual meet competition.

"These two guys (Myers and Swan) are the spark plugs of our team," Madden said. "They are a source of energy that has carried over to the rest of the squad."

Purdue had an impressive showing in singles, where every match was won in straight sets. Gordon defeated Scott Rutherford 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 1 position, while Myers made quick work of B.J. Munroe 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2.

Boiler sophomore Jason Marshall was in control of the No. 3 position, defeating Champy Halim 6-1, 6-1. Miller topped Amin Nabli 6-1, 6-2, while junior Cade Lutz disposed of Steven van der Westuyzen 6-1, 6-3. Junior Tushaar Gautum completed the sweep in singles at the No. 6 slot, downing Brent Richardson 6-2, 6-2.

"Today I thought we didn't take anything for granted," Madden said. "We came out and took it right to them (Western Michigan and Miami (Ohio) from the get go. "

Purdue will be on the road next against Florida on Feb. 27 at noon and at Central Florida on Feb. 28 at 11 a.m.
