UTRGV closed out the fall with another championship as Zane Kohrs won the Draw C Singles Championship at the Contender CrossFit Islander Open.

Nelson guided the team to 11 victories in 2017-18 while winning seven of nine matches at home. Nelson continues to make academics a priority as the team was named an ITA All-Academic Team while earning the AD Cup for having the highest team GPA.

Under Nelson, Koby Jansen, Yehonatan Kaufman, Elliot Johnstone, and Zane Kohrs were named ITA Scholar Athletes.

In his first season at UTRGV, he guided Koby Jansen and Clément Sarradin to All-WAC Second Team Doubles honors after the duo went 4-1 in conference play. Jansen recorded an 11-9 doubles record while Sarradin went 12-11 in his first season with the program.

Nelson also helped Jansen earn and Yehonatan Kaufman to All-WAC Tournament Singles Team honors for their performances at the WAC Tournament.

Under Nelson, Jansen, Sarradin, Elliot Johnstone, Andres Hernandez and Mateo Schmit each were named ITA Scholar Athletes while the team was named an ITA All-Academic team. The team also had the highest grade point average among men’s team in the department with a 3.571.

He went 122-110-1 (.526) at SIU, making him the second-winningest coach in program history. Nelson led his team to MVC Championships in 2009 and 2016, including an NCAA Tournament appearance and a career-best 18-7 record in 2009.

During his time at SIU, Nelson mentored 16 All-MVC singles players and three All-MVC doubles teams. His teams also combined to produce 17 MVC Scholar-Athlete Team members.

He developed the No. 28 ranked doubles duo of Sergio Sanchez and Felipe Villasenor in 2006, as well as the No. 41 ranked team of Jonny Rigby and Michal Kianicka this past season. Rigby and Kianicka also won the 2013 MVC No. 1 Doubles Championship. The 2009 season ranks among the best in SIU history, as Nelson guided the Salukis to just the third MVC title in school history and the first since 1990, en route to the NCAA Tournament and the MVC Coach of the Year award. Four student-athletes earned All-MVC honors (Vidal, Villasenor, West and Lucas Waked), while West earned MVC Freshman of the Year recognition. Additionally, Vidal and Leonenko earned Academic All-MVC honors.

Nelson earned MVC Co-Coach of the Year honors in 2014 as, after a slow start, the Salukis went 7-1 to close out the regular season.
