The Boilermakers could not get shots to fall in an 85-82 overtime loss to Penn State on Wednesday night. Despite committing just four turnovers, the second fewest in program history, and taking 26 more shots, the Boilermakers were not able to overcome a 37% night shooting and 5-of-26 from behind the arc. Wednesday was the 11th time in the last 30 years in all of college basketball that a team lost when committing four or fewer turnovers and taking 26 more shots.
NOTES
• Kiki Smith snapped out of a shooting slump over the last two games, averaging 20 points on 54.2% shooting with six 3-pointers at a 46.2% clip. She also went 8-of-9 at the line (89%) during the stretch.
• Leading the Boilermakers in scoring and rebounding, Tara Daye is one of four Big Ten guards and one of 10 guards from a power conference to average better than 12 points (12.4) and 6.5 rebounds (6.8) this season.
• Playing just about every role on the court, Madison Layden-Zay is fifth in the Big Ten with 34.4 minutes per game this season. She ranks third in Big Ten games with 36.9 minutes per night.
• After claiming the career 3-point record at Purdue, Layden-Zay has steadily climbed the charts to rank 24th in career scoring, 17 in assists, 14th in steals, eighth in games started, seventh in assist-to-turnover ratio and fifth in minutes played.
• Avery Gordon has continued her development this season. After averaging just 3.5 points over her first 14 games of the year, the rookie has averaged 9.0 points per game on 74.2% shooting over her last six outings, including a career-high 20 points against Michigan State in her first career start.
• Kendall Puryear finished in double figures in each of the last two games with 12 and 13 points, respectively, on 5-of-7 shooting. The sophomore is averaging 7.0 points on 55.7% shooting this season.
• Purdue is 18-2 since the start of last year when scoring 70 or more points and 10-2 this season. On the flip side, Purdue is 7-2 this year and 17-4 since the start 2024-25 when holding teams to 70 points or fewer.
