SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Purdue men’s golf team had a solid opening day at the Fighting Irish Classic, sitting in a sixth-place tie after 36 holes at the Warren Golf Course.
Purdue tallied a 36-hole total of 5-over par 565 on rounds of even-par 280 and 5-over par 285, to be in a sixth-place tie out of 15 teams.
The top five teams are North Carolina (-11), UCLA (-8), Louisville (-13) and Georgia Southern (+1) and Notre Dame (+1) tied for fourth. Five other teams (Iowa, Little Rock, Tennessee, Oklahoma State and Indiana) are within six shots of the Boilermakers.
Kentaro Nanayama leads Purdue at 1-under par 139 on rounds of 67-72.
Supapon Amornchaichan had a wild opening day to sit in 22nd place at 1-over par 141 on rounds of 72-69. In his second round, Amornchaichan was 4-over par through seven holes, but birdied five of his last 11 holes for his 1-under round of 69.
Sam Easterbrook and Jenson Forrester are tied for 34th at 3-over par 143. Easterbrook tallied rounds of 73-70, while Forrester recorded 18-hole scores of 69-74.
Andre Zhu is tied for 52nd at 6-over par 146 (72-74), but had the highlight of the day with a hole-in-one on the par-3 4th hole in the first round.
Purdue will be paired with Notre Dame and Georgia Southern in Tuesday’s final round, beginning at 9 a.m. ET, in South Bend, Indiana.
